Along with adult sims, all other ages now have additional trait slots:

Sims can have up to 5 traits, while adults can have up to 5 traits, young adults can have up to 5 traits, and teens can have up to 4 traits. Toddlers and children can have 3 or 2 traits each.

You are not required to fill all five trait slots if you do not wish to. Sims with only one trait can exist.
